Completing Sentences

Rule 1:
Simple Sentences

Example: 1. The term “Health” means soundness of both body and mind.
2. An unhealthy rich man can’t enjoy a sound mind.
3. So, it is called one of the greatest gifts.
4. The crow flew on and on in search of water, but failed.
5. But her over population can be turned into asset.
6. An honest man is loved by all.
7. Only honest way can lead the country to the progress.
8. Mobile phones have brought a revolution in the field of communication.
9. Owing to the latest technology, Bangladesh has made a great leap in the world of Communication.
10. They blame their own lot for their misfortune.
11. It is true that idle inactive person suffers in the long run.
12. But many active and energetic persons idle away their time for nothing.
13. A prosperous nation always uses time properly.
14. But we as a nation do not realize the value of time.
15. Time once lost is lost forever.
16. Independence is the birth right of a man. But in most cases people have to struggle to gain it.
17. Idle people are nothing but liabilities to the country.
18. Idle people give nothing to the society as well as to the family.
19. But she started reading with a view to becoming successful.
20. Every year many tourists visit Cox’s Bazar with a view to enjoying their holidays.
21. On the sea beach, they feel like playing like children.
22. But the beauty and serenity of Cox’s Bazar is being spoilt.
23. Computer is one of the greatest wonders of modern science.
24. It renders great service to mankind.
25. We cannot help going a single moment without computers.
25. A computer is a blessing to human beings.
26. In the night of 14 December, the Pakistani Army and the Rajakar  killed the intellectuals mercilessly.
27. Students should read text book again and again with a view to understanding the lessons properly.
28. A person with a crown may not be happy.
29. A day labourer may have happiness living in a shabby hut.
30. Books are men’s best companions in life.
31. Books are your real friends as long as you are alive.
32. At present Cricket is the most popular game in our country.
33. It is essential to take effective measures to upgrade the standard.
34. Truthfulness is one of the greatest virtues of a man.
35. An honest man does not care anybody.
36. Independence is our birthright.
37. The National Memorial signifies the supreme sacrifice of our valiant fighters.
38. Patriotism is a noble virtue.
39. Illiteracy is a great problem in Bangladesh.
40. There are many reasons responsible for our illiteracy.
41. The sooner it can be controlled, the better the life will be.
42. Finishing the work, he went out.
43. I saw him walking in the garden.
44. Porters and hawkers are found busy in the station.
45. To walk in the morning is conductive to our health.

Rule 2: What = কি /যেটা Whatever = যা-

Example: 1. She asked what his name was.
2. He cannot do whatever he likes.
3. Though our farmers work hard, they do not get what they need.
4. What we need is a commitment.
5. I don’t know what time it is.
6.
Man is not satisfied with what he has seen and known.
7. Do what you’re told.
8. He can achieve what he desires.
9. He is content with what he gets.
10.
There was no way of knowing what was on his mind.

Rule 3: When = কখন/ যখন Whenever = যখনই

Example: 1. It is 12.00 am when the day starts.
2. I become happy when I get the daily newspaper in the early morning.
3. 1971 is the year when Bangladesh became independent.
4. One day when they were passing through a forest they saw a bear coming to them.
5. They were frightened when they saw the bear.
6. Leisure means the time when we remain free from our regular work.
7. Saturday is the day when he goes for fishing.
8. When they saw the tiger, they ran away.
9. Whenever he goes to school, he makes a noise.
10. When he will arrive here is uncertain.
11. When I get time, I go into my garden.
12. It is in childhood when we should build up good character.
13.
Surface water is safe when it is boiled.
14.
I purchase books whenever I get the opportunity.
15. When anyone falls in danger, others help him.
16. When I see the garden full of flowers, I forget the sufferings of daily life.
17. His face smiles when crops grow in plenty.
18. It was a hot summer day when a crow was very thirsty.
19. When it woke, it began to search water again.
20. When he was dethroned he took a shelter in a cave.
21. When someone visits a historical place, he knows many things.
22. So when we get free time, we should visit a historical place.
23. There is no end of hope, when hope is gone life becomes meaningless.
24. When the students stood up the teacher entered the classroom.
25. You may not get good friends when you need them.
26. Parents think that spending money for the children’s education is unwise especially when the child is a girl.
27. Youth is the period of time when we have much courage among us.
28. Unemployment is a state when a man has no work to earn money.
29. It is in the childhood when we should build up good character.
30. A railway station becomes busy and crowded when trains arrive.

Rule 4: While = যখন

Example: 1. Strike the iron while it is red.
2. Yesterday he had an accident while he was crossing the road.
3. While I was walking, I saw a nice bird.
4. He went there while it was raining.
5. Don’t go out while it rains.
6. Do not talk while you are studying.
7. While we are in our class room, we cannot play games.
8. While walking, I saw a snake in the garden.
9.
One day while he was cutting wood, all on a sudden the axe fell into the river.
10. While there is life there is hope.

Rule 5: Where = কোথায়/যেখানে

Example: 1. Danger often comes where danger is feared.
2.
It should be a clam and peaceful place where the students would be able to study attentively.
3. A railway station is place where train stops and starts from.
4. We immediately decided to shift him to a hospital where he could get proper treatment.
5. Jessore is the place where he was born.
6.
There I found hundreds of book stalls where so many books were nicely arranged.
7. This is Bangladesh where we live.
8. Where there is a will, there is a way.
9.
Where he works is not a safe place for children.
10. She asked him where he had been.
11. Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
12. Faults are thick where love is thin.
13. She lives in a family where there are eight members.
14.
Most of this problem occurs in the areas where roads are very narrow.
15. Where there is hope, there is life.
Rule 6: Why = কেন

Example: 1.
Tell me why you broke the rule.
2. I don't know why he is so secretive.
3. She explains why this house is used for a prison.
4. That is 
why I thought about buying a new PlayStation.
5. I wonder 
why I didn't think of something like that long ago.
6. Why he went there is unknown.
7. Why he acted like a fool was a secret.
8. Somebody told him why he considered Napoleon to be the originator of the war.
9. William himself did not know
why he did it.
10. The reason why he did it is illogical.

Rule 7: How = কেমন /কিভাবে/যেভাবে

Example: 1. I showed him how it can be done.
2.
That's how life works.
3. He knew 
how to work hard.
4. He thought 
how terrible it would be to live there.
5.
One of them knew how to climb a tree.
6. The thief confessed how he had stolen books.
7. How he died is a mystery.
8. They knew how to talk.
9. He doesn’t know how to play cricket.
10. Do you know how to do the sum?

Rule 8: Whom =
কাকে/ কাদেরকে/ যাকে/ যাদেরকে

Examples: 1. The man is a famous Artist whom I saw yesterday.
2. He is my teacher whom I respect very much.
3. The man whom I saw yesterday is a famous doctor.

She knew nothing about the man with whom she had gone to visit the place.
5. You could help for whom you really cared.
6. T
he famous man about whom he has told you is not true.
7. The man whom I know very well doesn’t talk to me.
8. From whom did you get this?

9. He was the only person to whom he could speak.
10.
She recognizes instantly a person whom she has once met.

Rule 9: Who = কে/কারা/যে/যারা Whose = যার

Example: 1. The first AIDS patient was a man who worked in the Royal Navy.
2. There is hardly any person who does not hate a liar.
3. It is said that those who do not love flowers are cruel.
4. Those who have become great in life utilised their time properly.
5. There are some boys who like to play in the rain.
6. Once there lived a maiden whose name was Cinderella.
7. I do not like people who tell lies.
8. People who are not punctual cannot shine in life.
9. I think those who are untidy in their lifestyle will lag behind.
10. Educated women have higher income potential than those who do not have education.
11. Those mothers who are educated can take care of both male and female children.
12. The friend who knew how to climb left his friend.
13. Once there was a king who was fond of knowing his future.
14. She had two elder sisters who were unkind to her.
15. Once there were two friends who were very intimate.
16. The friend who could not climb up tree pretended to be dead.
17. A farmer who produces foods for others lives in village.
18. Once there was a woodcutter who used to cut wood in the jungle.
19. Once there was a cobbler who was poor.
20. But he had a neighbour who was rich.
21. A man who leads an idle life, always remains poor.
22. Women who constitute half of the total population can contribute much in this regard.
23. Those who are prudent do not miss any opportunity.
24. People who live in the midst of plenty do not always eat a balanced diet.
25. Once there was a greedy farmer who had a goose.
26. There was an old farmer who had four sons.
27. Many people who live below the poverty level cannot fulfill their daily needs.
28. Man who wastes time idly suffers in the long run.
29. We can take instance from our valiant sons who sacrificed their lives for their Motherland.
30. The man who touched the highest peak of success is praised by all.

31. Nothing is impossible for a man who is sincere.
32. There is nobody who does not hate a liar.
33. Those who hanker after riches cannot be happy.
34. Therefore we salute the freedom fighters and hate them who were against the Liberation War.
35. Most of the people who live in villages work in the field.
36. A wise man is one who has wisdom.
37. National memorial stands upright for the millions of martyrs who laid down their lives for the freedom of their motherland.

38. The person who is truthful is trusted everywhere.
39. Those who are bestowed with good character, earns respect from all.
40. The person who is content with his honest means is a happy man.

Rule 10: Which = যেটা/যেগুলো

Example: 1. AIDS is a fatal disease which is incurable / is very dangerous.
2. On the 21st February I went to Ekushey Boi Mela which was organized at Bangla Academy.
3. The books which are written by famous writers are a great source of knowledge.
4. Our agriculture which is our main source of economy depends on rainfall.
5. It is education which is the backbone of a nation.
6. The two friends were traveling through a forest which was full of wild animals.
7. Love is divine which ensures peace in the world.
8. Besides, trees bring rainfall which is essential for agriculture.
9. Trees supply oxygen without which we can’t think of our existence.
10. I have put a fence around the garden which protects the garden.
11. The astrologer told him something which was quite unpleasant.
12. Traffic jam is a common affair which occurs in the big cities and towns.
13. It causes great suffering to the ambulances which carry patients.
14. One day he saw a spider which was trying to reach the ceiling.
15. As a result they suffer from various diseases which may cause death.
16. Poverty is a curse which makes our life miserable.
17. Time which is very valuable should be maintained properly.
18. We are the citizens of a country which is beset with various acute problems.

19. It is time which never stops its journey.
20. The Shat Gambuj Mosque is a 15th century Islamic edifice which is one of the three world heritage sites.
21. We need a special kind of education which can help us to gain wisdom.

22. The national Memorial which is situated at Savar is a symbol of nation’s respect for the martyrs.
23. It is an achievement which is immeasurable.

24. Unemployment is a social evil which must be eradicated at any cost.
25. It is character which is one of the greatest assets of a man.

Rule 11: That = যে/যেটা
Example: 1. It is such a disease that leads the patient to death.
2. The doctors suggest that prevention is the only solution so far.
3. There is no further remedy that can cure the patient.
4. The story of the old man and his sons teaches us that unity is strength.
5. Everybody must remember that without sincerity none can attain success.
6. A proverb goes that time and tide wait for none.
7. I was delighted that I could come close to a renowned novelist.
8. I think that it may rain today.
9. I believe that everybody can shine in life.
10. It is important to realize that girls can contribute to the society like boys.
11. A proverb goes that health is wealth.
12. It is love that unites all.
13. If you are not loved, it is good evidence that you don’t love others.
14. It is so happened that a famous astrologer stopped at his capital.
15. It is true that man is the architect of his own fate.
16. It is a wrong idea that man’s life is decided by fate.
17. One of the friends knew that a bear does not touch a dead body.
18. The cobbler told him that he had no problem.
19. The cobbler also said that he was happy.
20. It is known that gold is a precious metal.
21. There are many worthless things that also glitter.
22. So the proverb teaches us that we should not judge a thing on its outward appearance.
23. It is cricket that is a very exciting game.
24. It is true that opportunity does not come always.
25. We are not sure that another chance will come.
26. So it is our duty that we should make the best use of any opportunity.
27. We should bear in mind that we do not eat just to satisfy hunger.
28. The fact is that they have no knowledge about food value.
29. But it was an irony of fate that he found nothing in the belly of the goose.
30. Honesty is the best policy that is known to all.
31. When we eat food, we should bear in mind that only right kind of food can preserve our health.
32. Sometimes it so happens that we fail to choose the right kind of food.
33. It is hope that helps us to live.
34. It is reasonable income that increases the per capita income.
35. Dowry means property or money that is claimed by the bridegroom.
36. The Bay is so vast and eye catching that tourists come here frequently.
37. It is happiness that is a relative term.
38. Again, it is happiness that varies from person to person.
39. But it is books that are always ready to be by your side.
40. It is youth that is the prime time of our life.

Rule 12: Because = কারন

Example: 1. We should say `no’ to corruption because corruption is disgraceful.
2. Many people cultivate flowers because they love flowers.
3. The illiterate people of our country fall a prey to various diseases because they are not conscious of their health.
4. They cannot improve their condition because they are poor and uneducated.
5. We should be sincere because sincerity brings success.
6. I don’t like to play in the rain because I may become sick.
7. But nowadays peaceful atmosphere is absent from the college because there are political violence’s and students clashes.
8. Truthfulness is a great virtue because it makes a man great.
9. A village farmer cultivates others land because he has no land of his own.
10. We should pay a visit to a historical place because it will enrich our domain of knowledge.
11. We learn English because it is an international language.
12. They get sick because they eat a lot of fatty foods.
13. People of an independent country must preserve independence, because it holds our head up among all the nations.
14. We learn English because we need it in almost every sphere of our life.
15. A student must take care of his health because health is the root of all happiness.
16. The villagers are poor because they are illiterate.
17. They think female children need no education because they cannot help their parents in their old age.
18. He made a good result because he studied attentively.
19. He could not attend the class because he was ill.
20. He will shine in life because he works regularly.

Rule 13:
Lest =
তা না হলে
…………lest + Sub + should + V1 + O.

Example: 1. Sumi reads attentively lest she should fail in the exam.
2. He began to read attentively lest he should fail in the examination.
3. He fled away at midnight lest anyone should see him.
4. They spoke in low voice lest anyone should hear them.
5. Walk fast lest you should miss the train.
6. Read attentively lest you should fail in the examination.
7. The old man is walking carefully lest he should fall down.
8. Avoid mistakes lest you should get poor marks.
9. Check the beast in you lest you should fail in life.
10. The students walked faster lest they should miss the class.

24. We can make our food balanced if we eat a lot of vegetables.
25. If we leave our work for tomorrow we will lag behind.
26. If you pray, you can feel heavenly bliss.
27. If we are not careful, there is chance to lose our independence.
28. One can prosper in life if one tries heart and soul
29. One must suffer in the long run if one does not make the best use of time.
30. If we lose the morning hours of life we will have to suffer in the long run.
31. If we sow good seeds in youth we will reap a good harvest in old age.
32. If we remain lazy we have to suffer from poverty.
33. If she were serious from the beginning she would be successful.
34. If the guardians fail to fulfill the demand of the bridegroom the brides may be tortured.
35. The helpless parents of the bride are compelled to provide dowry even if they have no ability.
36. Peace and prosperity are not possible if we do not work hard.
37. If we cannot preserve the beauty and serenity of Cox’s Bazar, we will lose the best tourist attraction of the country.
38. If there is any natural calamity he should take part in humanitarian work.
39. A beggar can be happy if he has a coin.
40. If the income of the people increases, the development of the country will be accelerated.
41. Nobody gets perfection in life if he does not try to remove ignorance.
42. If we read books, we can remove ignorance.
43. We should work together if we want to establish a corruption free society.
44. If he does not follow the social rules, there will be chaos and conflict.
45. If he makes the best use of his time, he will shine in life.
46. But if he does otherwise, he will lag behind in the race of life.
47. If any work is not done properly, it will not result in success.
48. If he once falls behind, he will not be able to compete with others.
49. You will not be trusted if you are a liar.
50. If we invest in education for girls they will be self-reliant.
51. So if we miss any opportunity, we have to suffer a lot.
52. One cannot command the respect of others unless he is truthful.
53. You cannot find others to love you unless you love them.
54. Unless we learn English we will lag behind in the race of globalization.
55. Unless we are honest in earning money we cannot be happy.
56. Unless a man works hard he will not succeed in life.
57. Unless we are truthful we cannot shine in life.
58. Unless we can sacrifice ourselves for our nation we shall not be termed as patriots.
59. If it rains, I shall not go out.
60. If he wants to enjoy peace, he is to abide by social rules.


Rule 15: Not only… but also…  =  শুধু এইটাই নয়,ওইটাও

Example: 1. Corrupted persons are not only dishonest but also criminals.
2. But sincerity does not mean only to do any work properly; it also means to do any work honestly.
3. Those television programmes are affecting not only the attitudes of our youths but also their dress style.
4. Studying abroad will not only upgrade his qualifications but also promote his intellectual development.
5. The Shat Gambuj mosque was used not only as a prayer hall but also as a court.

Rule 16:         It is high time / It is time/ It is proper time, S + V2 + O.
                         It is time + for + Personal Object + to +  V1 + O.
                         It is time + to + V1 + O.

Example: 1.
Now, it is high time we removed corruption from the society.
2. It is time to start the work.
3. It is time for us to attack the enemy.
4. It is high time we did something for the country.
5. It is time we gave emphasis on learning English.
6. It is high time we met him.
7. It is time to leave the place.
8. It is high time we learnt the lesson.
9. It is time we controlled the growth of our population.
10. It is time for them to think about it.

Rule 17: _____ so + Adjective/Adverb + that + S + cannot/ could not + V1 + O / (Meaningful Sentence)

Example: 1. But we are so self-centered that we always think of self-interest.
2. Time is so valuable that we should not waste it.
3. Television serials are getting so popular that the children become addicted to them.
4. Getting a scholarship is so competitive that only the brilliant students can get it.
5. Water is so vital of all natural resources that it is called life.
6. At this the king grew so furious that he ordered his men to kill him.
7. He felt so tempted that his mouth watered at the sight of them.
8. The grapes were hanging so high that he could not reach them.
9. She was so shocked that she always remembered her dead mother.
10. He became so greedy that he wanted to have all the eggs at a time.
11. They were so disobedient that they quarreled among themselves.
12. The load is so heavy that I cannot carry it.
13. The man was so ill that he could not move.
14. Many farmers are so poor that they cannot cultivate their land.
15. The sailor’s throats were so dry that they could not speak.

Rule 18: Incomplete Proverbs

Example: 1. The wearer best knows where the shoe pinches.
2. If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing well.
3. If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again.
4. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
5. The grass is greener on the other side of the fence.
6. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
7. As you make your bed, you must lie in it.
8. Spare the rod, and spoil the child.
9. Danger comes where danger is feared.
10. A bad workman always blames his tools.
11. Barking dog seldom bites.
12. Beauty is only skin deep.
13. Beggars can't be choosers.

Rule 19: Questions

Example: 1. Don’t you know this wise saying?
2. Would you mind taking a cup of tea?
3. Would you mind opening the door?
4. Would you mind waiting for a while?
5. Do you know where he is?

Rule 20: As / Since = যেহেতু

Example: 1. As flower is a symbol of love, beauty and purity, it is liked by all.
2. Since Bangladesh is an agricultural country her economy depends largely on Agriculture.
3. As her economy depends on agriculture, she needs to put emphasis on it.
4. Pond water is not safe as different types of filthy things are mixed with it.
5. Since there is scarcity of pure water, everybody living there fetches drinking water from the tubewell of the neighboring village.
6. Since Bangladesh is an over populated country, unemployment problem is acute here.
7. We should not live in luxury since our country is poor.
8. Then the crow took a rest as it was tired.

Rule 21: Though/ Although = যদিও। In spite of/despite of = সত্ত্বেও।

Example: 1. Though lost wealth can be regained by hard work, lost time can’t be regained.
2. Despite the widespread popularity, television serials have some demerits also.
3. Instead of being an asset, population has become a burden.
4. In spite of his poverty, he helps the poor.
5. Though Bangladesh is a small country, she is burdened with huge population.
6. The greedy farmer was not happy though the goose would lay a golden egg daily.
7. Though the sons of the old farmer were grown up, they had no good relation with one another.
8. Some people earn money in any unfair way though they are not in need of it.
9. Although money is needed for our living we should not commit any crime for earning it.
10. She could not come out successful, though she worked hard.
11. Though Computer is a blessing it has some demerits.
12. But the enemies could not repress our sprit although we were weaker in arms.
13. Though a student’s main duty is to study he must take part in extracurricular activities.
14. Bangladesh has three World Heritage Sites, though she is a small country.
15. Though some steps have been taken, population is still increasing.
16. Though cricket is a costly game, people of all classes enjoy playing it.
17. Though he has to do a lot of works, he does not show any excuse.
18. Though an honest man has to suffer for the time being, he will win in the long run.
19. Though we are now independent, we had to achieve it at the cost of a sea of blood.
20. Though our government has taken some bold steps, still the rate of illiteracy is on the increase.
21. The people of Bangladesh are friendly though they are poor.
22. Though Bangladesh is blessed with rivers our farmers do not get water during dry season.
23. Though he was poor he was honest.
24. Although he is rich, he does not help the poor.
25. He could not catch the bus although he ran fast.

Rule 22: so that/ in order that = যাতে।

so that/ in order that + S + can/ could/ may/ might + V1 + _____

Example: 1. We have to develop cultivation scientifically so that we can grow more crops.
2. So he should make the best use of his time so that he can be successful.
3. I went to the book fair so that I could buy books.
4. Though some steps have been taken, population is still increasing.
5. Navid is applying for a scholarship in order that he can go abroad to study.
6. We work unitedly so that Bangladesh can prosper day by day.
7. He climbed up a tree so that he could save his life.
8. Many dishonest people cut trees so that they can get quick benefit.
9. I water the plants so that they can grow well.
10. Robert Bruce fought against the British soldiers so that he could free his country.
11. We work hard so that we can prosper in life.
12. We eat so that we may live.
13. We earn money so that we can live well.
14. He must observe the rules of health so that he can keep his body fit.
15. Khan Jahan Ali came to Bagerhat so that he could spread the light of Islam.
16. As a student, you should read properly so that you can shine in life.
17. To lesson discrimination in children’s educational status the government gives subsidy for female children so that parents can send their female children to school.
18. The youth can struggle a lot so that they can make their mission successful.
19. We can make them skilled workers in order that they can contribute to the country.
20. We should be punctual so that we can succeed in life.
21. We should make the habit of reading books so that we can acquire knowledge.
22. We should take some positive steps so that we can upgrade the status of our freedom fighters.
23. We should be motivated so that all of us can strongly feel for the national issues.
24. Our people are now trying sincerely so that this problem can be uprooted from the country.
25. We work seriously in order that Bangladesh can progress.


Rule 23: And = এবং as well as= একই সাথে

Example: 1. All great men are sincere and they become successful.
2. The sky is cloudy and the weather is gloomy.
3. I prefer wearing clean, ironed clothes and polished shoes.
4. Television programmes have to be entertaining as well as educative.
5. Once there was hungry fox and was searching for food.
6. He moved here and there and came to a vineyard.
7. He saw fine bunches of ripe grapes and felt tempted.
8. Cinderella’s mother was dead and she had to work hard in the kitchen.
9. They made her stay in the kitchen and do all the hard work.
10. One friend climbed up a tree and did not think of the fate of the other friend.
11. Traffic Jam kills our valuable time and hampers our work.
12. But at last he lost heart and gave up the hope of success.
13. I have a garden and it is in front of my reading room.
14. The king called on him and wanted to know his future.
15. One day the neigbour came to the cobbler and wanted to know his condition.
16. It glitters and looks very beautiful.
17. He took a knife and cut the belly of the goose.
18. Hope cheers our mind and delights our soul.
19. In youth the mind is soft and we can shape it as we want.
20. We want to make society civilized and there is no alternative to reading books.

Rule 24: So= তাই। And so = এবং তাই

Example: 1. A college is a seat of learning, so it should be calm and peaceful.
2. He is illiterate and so he can not apply scientific method of cultivation.
3. An idle man can never help people and so he cannot change his own fate.
4. In fact, true happiness lies in contentment, so we should be contented with what we have.
5. He studied attentively so, he made a good result.

Rule  25: To + V1

Example: 1. He was competent enough to get a scholarship.
2. So it is a wise decision to speak the truth always.
3. The woodcutter tried his best to find out his axe but failed.
4. It is our duty to do something for the country.
5. Everybody should try to cultivate honesty.
6. Bangladesh still has a long way to go to make the facility of technology available to all.
7. Mobile phone operators are trying to reduce the call rate.
8. Mobile phone users have the right to enjoy the lower call rate.
9. We have to work hard to prosper in life.
10. Brave sons sacrificed their lives to free the homeland.
11. It is true that most of the parents in our country are not interested enough to send their children to school.
12. The conscious people should play a vital role to make our country developed.
13. It is better to avoid telling lies.
14. Contentment is the key to succeed in life.
15. Our heroic sons sacrificed their lives to liberate our land.


Rule 26: But = কিন্তু।

Example: 1. One may succeed once or twice by telling a lie but he can’t continue it for a long time.
2. It is not fate but sincere efforts make him successful.
3. There may have ups and downs but he should not lose his heart.
4. It wanted to drink but there was no water.
5. He fought six battles one after another, but he was defeated each time.
6. He worked hard, but could not earn enough.
7. The old man tried to make his sons united but they didn’t pay any heed to him.
8. An honest man may not be rich but he is respected everywhere.
9. Everyman has a great desire for wealth but very few can achieve it.
10. Knowledge is very useful but wisdom cannot be neglected.
11. It is built with concrete, but made of blood.
12. Bangladesh is a test playing country but its standard is not high.
13. A person may be of blue blood but he may not have good character.
14.
I tried hard to teach her my sign language, but she was dull and inattentive.
15. She objected at first, but finally submitted.

Rule 27:   As soon as/ No sooner had / Scarcely had/ Hardly had = যেই মাত্র।
As soon as + S + V2 + O, S + V2 + O.
No sooner had + S + V3 + O + than + S + V2 + O.
Scarcely had/ Hardly had + S + V3 + O + when + S + V2 + O.

Example: 1. No sooner had I gone out than he came.
2. Scarcely had we reached the station when the train left.
3. Hardly had he reached the college when the examination began.
4. As soon as we left the college, it began to rain.
5. Scarcely had the teacher entered the class room when the students stood up.

Rule 28: As if/ As though = মনে হয় যেন।
Present Indefinite Tense + as if/ as though + Past Indefinite Tense./ Be verb (were)
Past Indefinite Tense + as if/ as though + Past Perfect Tense./ Be verb (had been)


Example: 1. We love and help one another as if we were brothers and sisters.
2. After the result she pretended as though she had known everything.
3. He pretends as if he knew everything.
4. It sounds as though it were a hammer.
5. He behaves as though he were a mad.

Rule 29:
    too……to = এতই ...…যে।
 ……too + adjective + to + V1.
 ……too + adjective/ adverb + for + personal object + to + V1.

Example: 1. Studying abroad is too expensive for an ordinary student to afford.
2. He is too dishonest to speak the truth.
3. He is too busy to meet you.
4. The problem was too difficult for me to solve.
5. The tea is too hot for me to drink.


Rule 30: By = দ্বারা। Without= ছাড়া।

Example: 1. Without a sound physique you can’t enjoy a sound mind.
2. Without learning English we cannot expect good jobs.
3. Everybody must remember that without sincerity none can attain success.
4. By telecasting good programme, television can play a great role in respect of entertainment.
5. By reading more, we can learn more.
6. By drinking clean water you can keep your body fit.
7. We can get power by eating rice and bread.
8. He will not be able to write well without writing much.
9. Without reading more you cannot pass.
10. Without taking physical exercise we cannot keep our body fit.

Rule 31: Would that/ wish/ fancy = অসম্ভব ইচ্ছা

Example: 1. I wish I were a king.
2. Would that he were alive today.
3. I fancy I had the wings of a bird.
4. I wish I were the President of USA.
5. I wish I were a child again.

Rule 32: Would rather / would sooner = বরং
……….would rather / would sooner + V1
+ than + Verb/Noun.

Example: 1. I would rather die than beg.
2. He would rather drink tea than coffee.
3. The man would rather starve than steal.
4. He would rather die than surrender.
5. I would sooner prepare a cake than buy.

Rule 33: Had better =  ভাল হয়
……had better + V1 + ……
Example: 1. You had better leave the place.
2. You had better see a doctor.
3. I had better ring him at once.
4. He had better go home.
5. They had better make a plan.

Rule 34: Until = যতক্ষণ না পর্যন্ত    Till/ As long as = যতক্ষণ পর্যন্ত

Example: 1. Wait here until I finish my work.
2. Wait here till I finish my work.
3. Don’t move as long as I go.
4. Wait for me until I come.
5. I will be watching the match until the match ends.
6. They are your real friends as long as you are alive.
7. Books are thought to be your real friend as long as you love them.
8. Wait here as long as it rains.
9. Mother will be nursing him till he comes round.
10. Allah will help us as long as our aim is honest.

Rule 35: Let alone = তার আবার/ দুরের কথা

Example: 1. He cannot pass in third division, let alone first division.
2. I cannot swim a kilometer, let alone ten kilometers.
3. The old farmer cannot visit a small town let alone a big town.
4. He can’t buy a motorcycle let alone a car.
5. My baby girl cannot say Daddy, let alone talk.
6. She would not speak anything to her friends, let alone give a speech on stage.
7. He doesn’t like travelling within the country, let alone overseas.
8. He cannot boil potatoes, let alone cook a meal.
9. He cannot get C grade in the exam, let alone GPA-5.
10. The old man cannot walk a kilometer , let alone ten kilometers.
